The Union Turnpike Merchants Association is
a not-for-profit organized group of businesses bordering from The Fame
Diner (by St. John's University) to the
west and Cunningham Park to the east, dedicated to the financial well being and
overall quality of life in its Queens, New York community.
The UTMA was formed in 1993 by the
pioneering force of fellow merchants Maria and Joe Deinnocentis, Wendy Marsh and Donna Drimer. Organizing the
Union
Turnpike's Street Fair was one of their first accomplishments which was a huge success.
This helped finance holiday decorations and area promotion and
advertising.
Some of the UTMA's accomplishments over the
years have been:
Requesting and implementing trees
along
the crosswalk of Union Turnpike.
Organizing decorative and promotional
banners along Union Turnpike
Fighting for and succeeding in
reducing
business property taxes by a small but significant percentage
Working with the community to ban a
"laser gun" establishment from opening on Union Turnpike
Rescheduling street pavement until after
the busy holiday season
The UTMA has developed many friendships with
fellow merchants, community leaders and politicians. Currently working with
St. John's University, the Association has organized events and promotions to welcome and acclimate
the new students to the community.
Aiming to create new and improved ways to
enhance the area, we look forward to continued quality of life and
prosperity.
